How to Verify Businesses and Understand Applicable Laws

Business-directory information is not proof of incorporation, licence, registration or regulatory approval. Before engaging a supplier or service provider, check its legal name, address, registration status, invoices and applicable sector licences.

Companies Act, 2013

Section 7 (incorporation): sets out the filing requirements for incorporating a company. Section 12 (registered office): requires a company to maintain a registered office capable of receiving and acknowledging communications and to comply with prescribed verification and disclosure requirements. Check company master data and filing status through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017

Section 22 (persons liable for registration): provides the general registration obligation subject to applicable thresholds and exceptions. Section 24 (compulsory registration): identifies specified categories required to register regardless of the normal threshold, subject to statutory exceptions. Section 31 (tax invoice): governs invoicing by registered suppliers. Verify GSTIN and registration details at the official GST portal; read GST guidance at CBIC GST.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019

Section 2(7) (consumer): defines who qualifies as a consumer, subject to statutory exclusions and exceptions. Section 2(47) (unfair trade practice): defines unfair methods or deceptive practices used to promote the sale, use or supply of goods or services. For eligible consumer grievances, consult the National Consumer Helpline.

Local and sector-specific approvals

Depending on the activity and premises, businesses may require local trade permissions, registration under applicable shops and establishments legislation, fire-safety clearances, pollution-control consent or other approvals. For Delhi, refer to the Delhi Labour Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Delhi Pollution Control Committee. Requirements differ across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

Important: Legal requirements depend on business activity, location, turnover and current notifications. The descriptions above are general guidance, not a determination that every listed business must hold each registration.
