10 Indian Shares That Delivered Strong Capital Gains and Dividends
A look at ten Indian listed companies whose shares appreciated between selected purchase dates in 2022 or 2023 and 18 December 2023, including the dividend information recorded at that time.
How the historical returns were calculated
Each example compares the recorded purchase price with the quoted price on 18 December 2023. The per-share price gain is the difference between these two prices, and the percentage gain is that difference divided by the purchase price, multiplied by 100. These are unrealised price gains unless the shares were actually sold at the quoted price.
Dividend figures are shown separately and are not included in the price-gain percentages. A listed dividend does not necessarily mean a hypothetical buyer on the stated purchase date qualified to receive it: entitlement depends on the applicable record date. Brokerage, taxes, transaction charges and subsequent corporate actions are excluded.

What investors should consider before buying shares
Strong past performance does not guarantee future returns. Evaluate the company's earnings, valuation, debt, cash flow, business prospects and dividend sustainability. Compare adjusted historical prices when corporate actions have occurred, and check current exchange announcements before acting.
For Indian tax purposes, gains on listed equity generally depend on the holding period, the applicable securities transaction tax conditions and the date of transfer. Under the rules introduced from 23 July 2024, qualifying short-term capital gains under Section 111A are generally taxed at 20%, while qualifying long-term gains under Section 112A exceeding the annual threshold of Rs. 1,25,000 are generally taxed at 12.5%, subject to applicable surcharge, cess and statutory conditions. Dividend income is generally taxable in the shareholder's hands at applicable rates. Tax rules may change, so verify the law relevant to the assessment year and your circumstances.
