Electronics Business Compliance in India
Manufacturers, importers, brand owners and sellers should verify product-specific requirements before placing electronics or electrical goods on the Indian market. Under the BIS framework, certification is generally voluntary, but the Central Government makes conformity with specified Indian Standards compulsory for notified products through Quality Control Orders and compulsory registration requirements.

Electronics and IT goods notified under the compulsory registration framework are listed under BIS Scheme-II. The exact product category, Indian Standard, effective date and amendments should be checked before manufacture, import or sale.
E-waste responsibilities
The E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 came into force on 1 April 2023. They apply, within their stated scope and exclusions, to specified manufacturers, producers, refurbishers, dismantlers and recyclers involved with electrical and electronic equipment listed in Schedule I and related e-waste. Businesses should review the current rules and amendments published by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Online sales and consumer protection
Businesses selling electronics through e-commerce should also review the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 and the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and amendments.
